300 KV transformers on the way to Umm Al Hayman

On 13 October 2021, four heavy lift trailers each carrying one of four 205-ton transformers arrived at the construction site. These transformers serve as high voltage converters (300 kV to 132 kV).

In Umm Al Hayman, Kuwait, one of the world’s largest wastewater projects is currently under construction to treat wastewater from southern Kuwait and supply process water to agriculture and industry.

In addition to the wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities for sludge treatment and reuse of the treated water, the scope of the project also includes a new electrical substation for converting high voltage to medium voltage (300 kV/132 kV/11 kV).

On 13 October 2021, four heavy lift trailers each carrying one of four 205-ton transformers arrived at the construction site. These transformers serve as high voltage converters (300 kV to 132 kV). With a total length of 28.50 m and a total weight of 246 tons per trailer, the transport was an organisational challenge for which even the motorway had to be temporarily closed. At an average speed of 5 km/h, the transformers were transported from the port to the plant within three nights between midnight and 6:00 am.
The new substation at the treatment plant is being built by WTE subcontractor Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and will be operated by the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) upon completion.

The successful transportation and arrival of the 300 MVA power transformers from Shuaiba Port to the Umm Al Hayman Site is the result of exceptional interface cooperation among several stakeholders, including ministries, police, client, contractor, subcontractors, engineers, and WTE HSE Personnel.
