WTE and EU invest in Croatian pearl Varaždin

Wastewater treatment plant extension embedded in master plan for entire region.

At the end of August, the contracts for the turnkey extension of the treatment plant were signed in Varaždin. The client is Varkom d.d.. WTE will be responsible for the new construction of the mechanical treatment stage, rebuilding and extension measures of the biological treatment stage and sludge treatment in a consortium with GIS Aqua. The capacity of the plant increases up to 127,000 PE, the sewage sludge will be thickened, anaerobically stabilized in a digestion, dewatered and the biogas will be used for energy. The contract price is approximately EUR 22 million, co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund.

The city of Varaždin is the center of the county of the same name with numerous other municipalities. For a total of more than EUR 100 million, the sewage network and the main collectors will be renovated and expanded. Over 200 km of canal will be partially newly built, over 100 pumping stations installed.

The city has many cultural and historical monuments and is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape. The historic city center in Baroque style is known far beyond Croatia’s borders for its tourist attractions.
